OGA History

History of Ogu General Assembly

The insights from Prof. Jendele Hungbo’s interactions with several Ogu leaders from the Ipokia Local Government, Yewa South Local Government, Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government, and Badagry Local Government, coupled with his reflection on the realities of marginalization of the Ogu in Ogun and Lagos States, led him to the conviction that the Ogu in Nigeria would need an all-encompassing platform, like the Ohaneze-Ndigbo, Arewa, and Afenifere.

He would later share this vision with Dr. Senayon Olaoluwa, Dr. Babatunde Olaide-Mesewaku, Mr. Joshua Nudegbesi, Dr. Henry Hunjo, Dr. Oluranti Samuel, and Mr. Otosede Williams. It was these vignettes that culminated in the July 13, 2019, meeting at his residence in Abeokuta. At the meeting, it was resolved that it would be necessary to institute a pan-Ogu body that would galvanise our development in all ramifications, beginning with the decisive assertion and reclamation of our identity, culture, and pride from the backwoods of denial and complacency while locating education, public enlightenment, and cultural affirmation at the centre of the formation.

At the assembly's second meeting at Ajilete on August 31, 2019, the name issue was raised, and it was resolved that members should suggest names and drop them on the assembly's WhatsApp platform, so the secretariat would harvest, collate, and present them for deliberation at the following meeting. By the third meeting at the Lagos State Heritage Museum, Badagry, on October 5, 2019, a total of six names had been presented to the Assembly by the secretary for debate. The day's debate shrank the list into just two names: Ogu General Assembly and Mijepo.

After this, serious consultations ensued, which helped to iron out several issues, including considerations for the existing Ogu groups and their names and a host of other factors. This culminated in a virtual meeting, where the two names left became adopted as both the name and motto of the assembly, respectively.
The subject of registration came up at the Assembly's many meetings, until it was unanimously resolved that the Assembly pursue its registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission of Nigeria. To be eligible for this, a three-man committee was constituted, comprising Mr. Abel Josu, Dr. Anthony Dansu, and Mr. Mewhenu Hosu, to draft a constitution for the assembly. Following a successful draft of the constitution, the Board of Trustees was constituted, and then an application for registration was filed. Today, the assembly is duly registered with Nigeria’s Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).
We Have a Common Purpose!

Our Statements

To see to the emergence of a united Ogu nation, speaking with one voice and pursuing a common destiny for the good of the Ogu wherever they may be found
To make every Ogu man or woman proud of his or her identity and the core values espoused by Ogu cultural ethos.
We do not envision this assembly as an enclave of individual stars or superstars. It is rather an umbrella body that seeks to institute a culture of collective care for the good of all. It is for this purpose that we have adopted the nuzon (participatory action) model in our activities, allowing all Gunuvi to have a hand in their own affairs and play a useful role in attaining the future we look forward to.
